The Somersworth Farmers Market is meeting its goal of improving access to fresh produce and reducing disparities to accessing healthy food.

In the 2015 season, SNAP/EBT members accessed a total of $5,799 to spend at the farmers market, $4,531 of which was distributed as free incentives through programs like market match and close the gap.

"Harvest Exchange Box" in Franklin - Give what you can... take what you need

This "Harvest Exchange Box" now adorns the lobby of Bessie Rowell Community Center in Franklin, NH.

This box is designed to be a place where the public can bring extra produce from their personal gardens and/or produce from a community garden site such as Bessie Rowell or Paul Smith School garden. The produce is then made available to those who can use it.

Anyone can drop off fresh produce and anyone can take what they need. What an exciting new resource!

Jim Demers, Executive Director of Newport Food Pantry  displays contents of Weekend School Backpack

The Newport Food Pantry began its Weekend School Backpack program three years ago to provide at-risk children with child-friendly, nonperishable, nutritious foods for weekends during the academic year. Each week nutrition student Melissa Catsum selects a variety of snacks to create well-balanced backpacks. Every Friday morning, volunteer drivers deliver those packs to nurses at participating schools for confidential distribution to children identified as being in need.

Using a Wellness Connection grant, organic juice, organic milk and at least one fresh fruit are now included in each pack. The Food Pantry now fills 62 backpacks each week.

Turn a New Leaf is the first county-wide healthy eating initiative in the state and was created by the Monadnock Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) program. The Monadnock Food Co-op partners with Turn a New Leaf to help customers make the healthiest choices in the deli.
